The term “general drafter” conjures the image of a draftsman capable of tackling a wide variety of drafting tasks. This versatility stems from training across multiple disciplines, making a general drafter an invaluable asset in numerous industries.
A Journey Through Drafting Disciplines
Let’s explore the journey of a general drafter, using my own career as an example. My drafting career began with mechanical drafting, which involves creating technical drawings for machine and fabrication shops. I acquired this foundational skill while serving in the U.S. Navy. Mechanical drafting is a specialized field, and mastering it marked my first step into the world of drafting.
After leaving the Navy, I transitioned to a new role with a land surveyor who trained me in boundary and topographical survey drafting. This added a second discipline to my repertoire. The surveyor also connected me with an architect, for whom I revised architectural drawings. This exposure led to significant experience in architectural drafting, encompassing both residential and commercial projects.
Later, I formally trained in architectural drafting, creating detailed plans for buildings based on sketches and ideas provided by architects. During this time, I was occasionally tasked with producing drawings for structural steel components used in construction, further expanding my expertise to include steel fabrication drafting. By this stage, I had gained experience in four distinct disciplines: mechanical drafting, survey drafting, architectural drafting, and steel fabrication drafting.
Expanding the Skill Set
As my career progressed, I opened my own drafting office, serving a diverse clientele. My projects included work for a large dairy company, two plastic injection molding firms, several home builders, an automotive parts manufacturer, a civil engineer, and two surveyors. Each of these clients required specialized drafting skills, which further broadened my expertise:
