What are Projections?

In technical drawings, projections are crucial for representing the view of an object accurately. A projection is made by extending lines of sight, known as projectors, from the observer’s eye through the edges and points of an object to a flat surface called the projection plane.

Types of Projections

  1. Central Projection: In this type of projection, the projectors meet at a single point (the observer’s eye). While it creates a unique view, it’s not commonly used in technical drawings due to its variability.
  2. Parallel Projection: This method is widely used in technical drawings. When the observer is far enough away, the projectors run parallel to each other, ensuring the object’s true size is maintained.
  3. Orthographic Projection: A subtype of parallel projection where the projectors are perpendicular to the projection plane. It accurately represents the object’s true size and dimensions.
  4. Oblique Projection: Here, the projectors hit the projection plane at an angle other than 90°. This projection shows multiple dimensions, making it useful for detailed views.
  5. Axonometric Projection: Another method to showcase all three dimensions of an object in a single view.

Why Projections Matter

Understanding and mastering these projection methods is essential for creating accurate technical drawings. They allow for precise communication of an object’s dimensions and geometry, crucial in engineering and design.
