Splines are smooth, curved lines defined by a series of control points. What Are Splines?

A spline is a mathematically generated curve that passes through or near a set of points. Unlike polylines or arcs, splines provide smooth transitions and flexibility in design.

How to Draw Splines in AutoCAD

2. Specify the First Point

  • Control Vertex Splines: The curve bends around the points.

4. Close or End the Spline

  • Press Enter to finish the spline as an open curve.
  • Type C and press Enter to close the spline into a loop.

Editing Splines in AutoCAD

Once created, splines can be edited to refine their shape or adjust their properties. Here are the primary editing methods:

1. Using Grips

Select the spline to reveal its grips. Drag the grips to adjust the shape of the spline:

  • Fit Points: Move these to change the exact path of the spline.
  • Control Vertices: Move these to modify the influence on the curve.

2. The SPLINEDIT Command

AutoCAD offers a dedicated command for editing splines:

  • Type SPLINEDIT in the command line and press Enter.
  • Select the spline to edit.
  • Choose from options like Fit Data, Control Vertices, Convert to Polyline, or Reverse.

3. Changing Properties

Use the Properties palette to adjust properties such as Degree and Fit Tolerance.

4. Trimming or Extending Splines

Splines can be trimmed or extended using the TRIM or EXTEND commands.

Tip: Simplify complex splines by converting them to polylines using the SPLINEDIT command.
